Magical Lighthouses
Part of the appeal lighthouses have is that they are found in some of the most beautiful settings, mostly on rugged coastlines dotted with conifers or beaches. Sunsets or sunrises at Lighthouses sites are often spectacular.
Lighthouses also appeal to our nostalgic and artistic senses, as they are some of the most historic structures to be found in the United States.
Whether warning of danger or marking safe passage into a harbor, lighthouses stand as beacons of safety and security. They often appeal to the spiritual side of people, symbolizing He who is “the Light that shines in darkness”.
Minnesota is about as far away from the ocean as it is possible to be in the United States, but it has a shoreline on Lake Superior and a major port at Duluth. Most of the ship traffic carries iron ore from the Mesabi Range north of Duluth. The state has 7 active lighthouses and one ruined lighthouse tower.
Split Rock lighthouse is Minnesota's most iconic landmark. Without a doubt, the lighthouse at Split Rock State Park is the most photographed subject in the state. And with good reason. It was constructed in one of the most beautiful settings, an imposing 130 ft high cliff jutting out into the icy, blue waters of Lake Superior along its rugged north shore.
Built after a 1905 fierce storm that sank one ship nearby and more than 30 others on Lake Superior. Superior is the most unpredictable, deepest, and coldest of the Great Lakes. Construction was complete in 1910 and the lighthouse was operational until 1969. In 1971 it received historical landmark status. Soon thereafter, over 2000 acres of land adjacent to it was set aside as a state park.
To start his photographic journey in Minnesota, Nadim Yared captured a magical moment of the sunrise, when the light is peaking threw the darkness of the night giving this deeply contrasted image and dramatic colors. In his interpretation of the Split Rock lighthouse Yared brought us the essence of the state of 10,000 lakes and its landmark.
