Vacationing in Hawaii conveys an image of serenity and calmness. Time in tropical islands seems to move slowly forward.
A perfect view in a tropical island includes the following ingredients: sky with few cumulonimbus clouds, colorful sunset, palm tree, umbrella, and sand. This picture almost includes all of the above ingredients, summarizing what your next vacation in a tropical island could be.
This photo was taken in Big Island, Hawaii. I found a spot in the Hilton hotel where I could frame the scene in between two vertical pillars. The setting sun added a rim of light on the right pillar, separating it from the palm branches. The vertical composition allows the eyes to wander up and down the blue to orange gradients of the sky, bound by the two vertical pillars. The umbrella and the clouds break the monotony of the gradient, and convey depth in the scene into the missing dimension.
Photographing sunsets can be a challenge. Using an electronic light usually helps to avoid black silhouettes against a colorful sky. If exposed for the foreground subject, the sky will appear white or fade colors. In this situation, I decided to expose for the sky, and keep the umbrella in the shadow, as the shape of the umbrella and the leaves of the palm trees are very graphic in black.
