Walking through the rainforest in the Big Island, Hawaii, under a misty rain, and the kids complaining about the need to wear the cheap bright colored ponchos, I stumbled across this fern surrounded by black trunks.
The contrast of the bright green of the fern, washed by the mist, with the help of saturation brought by the open shade light, gives this picture a surreal look of Hawaii, away from the beaches and the rolling waves of the Pacific.
The available low light in the shades required the use of a Tripod, to the great desperation of our kids, growing impatient under the rain. While waiting for the wind to slow down, to minimize risks of blurring, I started looking around for a similar composition, but that one stood out from the surrounding ferns. The pine trunks are where they should have been, and this fern had the right size and the right orientation.
