I have visited Moab and the surrounding National Parks at least 10 times over the last 5 years, and every trip is another source of amazement for my senses. I cannot get enough of seeing the breathtaking views of red rocks,arches, cliffs and canyons, extending to the greater infinity.
For the Thanksgiving weekend of 2004, we rented an RV and headed down southwest, one more time. Our first stop was in Canyonlands National Park, near Moab, Utah. We parked the RV at the southernmost point in the park, and as the kids were having diner, I setup the tripod and started shooting.
Clouds were dense, and while waiting, I was secretly hoping for an opening in the sky that shows the majesty of this full moon rising. And it did happen.
Right after sunset, or when lit by a full moon, high altitude mountains glow in red. This unique phenomenon is called the Alpenglow. In this situation, both combined (full moon rise and sunset) to create a superb alpenglow. The first snows of November perfectly capped the top of LaSal mountains, adding drama to the colored setting.
