This picture was taken at sunrise, on Highway 163, going from the Mexican Hat toward Monument valley. The evening before, we spotted the area, and since this was a full moon opportunity, I wanted to take a picture of the setting moon behind the buttes, while the first rays of sun are hitting the buttes.
It was close: the buttes were lit by the pink sky behind us, where the sun was rising, while the moon was setting majestically behind them. I love this picture: it summarizes an experience in the southwest: grandiose landscapes, extending to the infinity, majestic skies, striking colors and unusual shapes.
